Martial Arts Values!

Martial arts… the art of fighting? Building physical skills, increasing strength, flexibility, and stamina. Learning techniques for self-defense and learning how to take occasional hits.  Is that it? Not exactly!

Martial arts is about character development regardless of age. Once you feel confident and self-assured, the sky is the limit as to what you can do and achieve by having a strong sense of character. Learning, goal setting, building confidence and self-respect, dedication and discipline, working through challenges, showing respect and leadership. Martial artists extend their training beyond their body and connect their mind and body. THESE are the true values of martial arts.

It is not always easy. You face difficult times, setbacks, frustrations, disappointment but it shows your character how you face these challenges.  Commitment and perseverance is key to progress.

When you train as a martial artist, it is not about choice between this and that sport.  It is not about other hobbies vs Taekwondo.  It is a commitment and prioritization of life to better ourselves.  These are values that make a true martial artist dedicate a lifetime to learning and teaching martial arts.  You never hear a true practitioner of martial arts regretting that they started their journey.  But you do hear some regretting that they didn’t start their journey sooner.

If you haven’t started your journey, now is the time!

Notes from Mr. K.

Actions not just words!
Every one of us, everyone around us, has a different journey in life.  Circumstances, backgrounds, and abilities make us have different life experiences.  But humans always desire to do better and achieve more. At the end, however, a desire to do better and to achieve a goal is just a starting point.  Those who succeed must commit and dedicate themselves to achieve their goals.  A desire without action is just a wish, just words!

One of the most important martial arts tenets is perseverance.  Scholars of martial arts consider the training as a non-ending journey that starts with physical training and grows into a lifestyle. They celebrate many accomplishments along the way.  The first step may be getting a black belt.  But committing to a lifetime achievement takes more than just a few classes and occasional testing.  One must decide, set a goal, commit, work hard, and achieve!  This is the perseverance that martial arts teaches every student.  THIS IS A LIFE SKILL THAT GOES BEYOND CLASS BOUNDRIES! Embrace this training and make a commitment to succeed.

The Journey Doesn’t Stop with Black Belt!

Why does martial arts training grow in your heart? How can people train in this sport year after year and decades after decades? This is a non-ending journey of improvements and accomplishments.  We strive and work towards that black belt, but then what? “In martial arts, every time you graduate, move to another level, you don't forget everything you've done. You build on it.” A black belt is another phase in this journey.  It is not always easy. You face difficult times, frustrations, disappointment but it shows your character how you face these challenges.  Do you give up or persevere to move forward? That is what character building is about.  This is the true value of martial arts!

Tournament Values

Whether we think about it or not, competition is in all facets of today’s society. We compete to get into better schools, we compete to get better jobs, and so on.

For centuries, martial artists across the world have created competition opportunities and tournaments. Martial arts tournaments bring many values to the participant:
-Accelerate your learning and progress
-Courage to overcome your fears. Step out of comfort zone
-Set a goal, work towards a goal, learn, and move forward
-Build friendship and comradery
Aren’t these valuable life skills for all of us?
Participate in tournaments and have fun. And you may win some medals and trophies too!

Notes from Mr. K

Sparring, is it dangerous?
Some students and parents are not sure what happens when they get an orange belt and they start sparring.  We are not surprised. There are so many styles of sparring and so many different philosophies for sparring that causes confusion.  Many students watch online material and videos.  Unfortunately, in most cases, that is more harmful than helpful if they don’t know what to look for.

At Journey, we follow sparring rules that help students to excel in sparring over a period of time. No hard contact is allowed or promoted. Some students/parents have asked the value of light contact.

Our style of sparring promotes CONTROL as the primary means of developing skills.  Sport sparring is designed for athletic competition and development of skills which are rank and age related. Light contact does not mean slow or ineffective.  It means practicing in a safe way without causing serious injury.  Sparring is fun, safe, and a great work out.

Belt Rank System Update!

To improve the quality of training and provide necessary time for the students to become proficient in their skillsets, four intermediary levels are added to the belt system. We are announcing Sr Green-Brown ranks as part of the journey to black belt.  This entails no other changes to the curriculum.  This desirable change that is recommended by our national level training requirements will better prepare students to meet the black belt demanding requirements.  This change is effective immediately.

Belts vs Stripes

What is the difference between getting stripes on a belt and getting a new belt?  Stripes are a measure of readiness for rank testing.  Since every cycle focuses on different skills, stripes are per test cycle only.  If a student who has some stripes, chooses not to test for the next rank, the stripes are removed at the end of the cycle so the student can be evaluated for the following cycle.

Ranks are determined by the color of the belt.  Students earn a new rank after they have shown proficiency in the material thought during the test cycle, and have participated in minimum required classes.  Only violation of key tenets on Taekwondo may result in demotions.  Otherwise, ranks are permanent.

Our new form for the cycle is “Leadership”. It is timely to remind everyone about the leadership program at Journey Martial Arts.

A true leader has the ability to work towards a vision and unify others towards a common goal. Leadership, a true life skill, is taught and practiced at Journey Martial Marts for students who join the leadership program.  Opportunity for leadership in the program starts with the desire and passion to help the community and the students.  Leadership program at Journey is a program that trains those who are willing to take that extra step to participate in teaching and assisting in the program.  It grows with those who are willing to put in the extra time to learn and improve beyond average.  A leadership program creates opportunities for training and training beyond regular participation in classes.

All students, especially teens and adults, who are interested in participating in the leadership program should contact me for additional information.

Notes from Mr. K: Holiday stress

As we get into the holiday season, let’s keep our commitment to training and the goal to succeed. Consistency in training becomes even more important at higher ranks.

Challenge yourself by dealing with a more difficult level. Having occasional failures help drive future success; overcoming disappointment is character building and a necessary life skill. It is not always a smooth ride.

A black belt is a white belt who never quits. Work not for the stripe but persevere through the improvement of skills, knowledge, and strength. Build the courage to deal with the challenges in your journey.

The stress of the holidays will pass. The journey never does.

Notes from Mrs. K.

You have probably heard Mr. K saying “lose your belt in class, lose a stripe!” It is less about the belt itself and more about properly taking care of your appearance, etc.  It provides a better learning environment: Wearing clothing properly is for emphasis in supporting your team and your Journey. It is intended to provide safety and consistency for everyone.

Wear uniform and belt properly: Tuck in your T-shirt under the jacket.

You have options: Too hot in uniform? You can train in Journey T-shirts.

Win…

Cycle Tenet

Cycle tenet is Self-control.  Self-control is the ability of a martial artist to both mentally and physically control own actions in all circumstances

Notes from Mr. K.

Martial arts training costs – what to expect
Martial Arts is a journey. Training skills and opportunities grow as students move up the ranks.  Like any other sport (football, hockey, gymnastics, you name it!) at times there are costs associated with these activities. There are various opportunities such as: Rank test, Tournaments, training boot camps, etc with martial arts which incur different costs.

We have tried our best to guide the parents and students about what to expect for typical costs. All students are encouraged to refer to the document on their Kicksite members account and review the ESTIMATED costs.

Student start sparring at Orange belts. At Journey Martial Arts only Journey branded sparring gear is allowed.

Notes from Mrs. K.

Proper hygiene

Where does the term ‘martial’ as in martial arts come from? The term martial is related to the military because martial arts were originally developed for a warrior. It has evolved into a variety of uses – art form, competition, and so on. Think about how a soldier or warrior is expected to dress - clean uniforms, pressed, wrinkle-free.

Even if you do not want to impress the military lifestyle on your child, think about social impressions. Judgments are made based on first impressions, fair or not. Teaching the children that they should expect to wear clean, pressed clothing prepares them for the business world.

Also, because Taekwondo is a contact sport, it’s very important to keep the uniform clean.

Recommended cleaning techniques – wash uniform top, hang dry, press.

Dress Code

Have you ever been to a baseball game and noticed how the team members are expected to dress?  The players learn very quickly that they tuck in their shirt and pull up their socks. Why? Because they show their pride in being part of a team. They also know not to wear a soccer uniform or casual clothing to a baseball game. The safety requirements are different in each sport whether it is across different types of sports like soccer and hockey, or within different disciplines of martial arts. When you attend class at Journey Martial Arts, think of it as being on the baseball field and think of the pride of being part of the Taekwondo team!

Historically, roots of uniforms in martial arts are an indication of status and rank – like Samurais of Japan or the Korean Hwa Rang warriors! This is similar to today’s military forces as a status of rank and style of combat.  Uniforms at the academy carry a similar tradition, all “color” belts white through red wear a WHITE top, black belts wear a BLACK top, leaders wear a BLUE top, and instructors wear a RED top. New students wear casual clothing only because they don’t have a uniform yet.

The uniform is more than just a uniform. It identifies you and reminds you of your goals. It is a symbol of being part of the elite, a martial artist who could have given up when things got tough.  You didn’t – you answered the challenge! You will see a transformation in your life by the time you become a black belt. It’s not easy but it makes a difference for the rest of your life! However, we understand that traditional training needs adaption to modern way of living.  To adapt to the modern style of training we have made practical but safe options available vs full traditional uniform during regular class training. This allows students not to wear the top jacket and wear a T-shirt instead, but there is still a minimum requirement for the dress code at our school.

Taekwondo students!  Here is the required uniform for classes & testing:
Colored belts - Journey’s approved training uniform – Journey black pants, t-shirt, belt
The white Journey jacket can be worn at any time but it is required at testing and rank ceremonies.

Leaders – Journey’s approved full uniform - Blue jacket, black pants, t-shirt, belt
Instructors – Journey’s approved full uniform – Red jacket, black pants, t-shirt, belt

We appreciate your cooperation.  Please wear your attire neat, keep it clean, and wear it with pride!

Korean terms:              Uniform – Dobok                               Belt – Dhee

Notes from Mr. K.

“Respect” - more than words!

We have been talking a lot about Respect in our classes this cycle.  But talking is only half of it!  The other half is about learning how to show respect to your fellow martial arts friends in practice. Not tomorrow, not a wish, but right now while you train!

Showing respect and appreciation for others’ experiences is deep in our training environment.  When students partner up to compete, or work together as a team to compete against other teams, they learn sportsmanship and learn to respect the achievements of a winning team. This encourages them to work harder and do better next time.  The winners are encouraged to celebrate their achievements without bragging and downplaying others. They also are encouraged to celebrate the hard work of their classmates.

It is hard at times for some students not to win and they become bitter about someone else’s success.  But it is a life skill that we all learn in our Journey.  Respecting others is a character building effort that we all work on.

What’s “Form”? How do I Learn it?

Taekwondo students practice a series of technical movements that help them train in various aspects of the art such as athletic, artistic, safety, and effectiveness of techniques. These movements performed in certain patterns are called Forms. (In Japanese style of martial arts they are usually referred to as “Kata” but some Korean styles have adopted the term).

Every style of Taekwondo, has its Forms that uniquely differentiates that style from others.  Complexities of Forms change based on rank, age, and other parameters.  There is no magic about learning a Form.  A student should learn the technique and then practice the patterns until they are fluent at it. Like any other sport, the best way for a student to learn the details of the techniques is to attend as many classes as possible so the instructor can work with them on many details involved with the movements.  To aid in remembering the patterns, we have posted the Respect Form in the library under your private account.  You can log in and click on the Library à Video tab and select Respect Form to see the posts.

Remember that these videos are provided as an aid and they do NOT replace the actual practice at school.

Successful people set goals and drive towards them.  We may not achieve all of our goals but going aimless is even worse.  At Journey Martial Arts, we encourage students to develop the life skill and habits to achieve their goals.

We are announcing our “goal setting” initiative.  Every so often, we will announce a new goal for the week.  Achieve that goal and get recognized at the academy. Our goal between now and the end of the month is to learn all the techniques in our “Respect” form.  Let’s do this!

Parties
We had our first birthday party at our school. Jameson turned 7 years old. He and his friends had a blast! I heard several kids say “I want a birthday party here”. Especially when the birthday kid cut the cake with a sword! We can do a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle theme or a theme of your choice.

A coupon is included in the goody bag for a week of free classes. Ask Mrs. K for the forms and invitations if you want to schedule a party.
